Trigger Point Therapy

What is Trigger Point Therapy

What is a trigger point? It is an area within the muscle tissue that becomes tight,  and creates a referral of pain throughout other parts of the body.  We have many trigger points throughout the body, an example of a referral pattern from a trigger point in the back is that it may travel or radiate to the neck and shoulder region.  This trigger point now acts as a satellite point, and then may cause the pain to travel to the head.  Different variations of the pain may be felt, either sharp, intense or a dull ache.

Trigger point massage therapy is effective in alleviating the primary source of pain and tension through cycles of localized firm pressure and release.  Deep breathing is encouraged by the recipient throughout trigger point therapy, as the massage therapist identifies the primary location of the trigger point.

An increase in water after trigger point therapy is encouraged by the client in order to rehydrate the muscle tissue, and promote optimal lymphatic function.
